---It has been far too long since I've first heard about this milk bar place. Foodblogs have been raving about this place for months on end, so I definitely had to check it out! Not having eaten at a place at Redfern before, this made me even more keen! And it is such a short walking distance from Redfern station too, great for USyd students to stop by.
I can never forget this day when my friends and I lunched at this Milk Bar. Simply because it was raining sooooo hard! That idea that the weather makes the day 'a day to remember' is so true, I shall remember how my $15 Kmart gold-stud royal blue flats became a boat in an ocean of puddle.
$5 burgers!! They have a few $5 burgers, but the rest range from $6 to $12, and you can have sides of fries too. The cheeseburger has a lovely chunky beef patty, on a nice fresh soft and fluffy bun, the grilled onions are plentiful, and yes, be prepared for lockjaw and lickworthy palms and fingers because you're in for a huge bite!
The menu has changed since mid-2012; there are more burger options around this year.
Brekkie burger - Burger, organic cheese, free range egg, “quattro stele” bacon, tomato relish, grilled onions” - $8.50
Cheeseburger with Italian topping; rocket, tomato, aioli, balsamic, parmesan - $8
Yes I quite enjoyed this burger, you could definitely sense that Italian feel.
Cheeseburger and Aussie topping - roasted beetroot, free range egg, free range bacon, lettuce, tomato - $10
Ai's freaking awesome chicken wings in vinegar and shallot sauce - $13
This dish also comes with the options of hot sauce and crab sauce. I was definitely feeling my Viet/Asian vibe, so I went for the vinegar and shallot sauce, and it was definitely the freaking awesomest dish of the whole meal! It takes the cup for me, and it lives up to its name! The batter is a different crispy to Arisun's KFC which is very very crispy and doesn't feel oily. However, for this dish, you can taste the oil just a tad. The sauce covered the entire chicken and called for sticky fingers!! The batter is the most addictive thing ever, around 10 pieces for $13 is a bargain!!
Crab and a cone - Cafe Ish's well known crab omelette, with a cone of fries - $14
A smaller version of their famous crab omelette, this dish consists of karaage soft shell crab, avocado, shallot with garlic, chilli, soy, and ginger sauce. My friend really loved it!
Lime time - vanilla ice cream, lemon, lime and yuzu curd, finger lime caviar
Yes real lemon is used, and it's a very refreshing drink."Chuck Norris" - it's a PG rated Pina Colada -Vanilla ice cream, coconut macaroon ice cream, vanilla braised pineapple, yuzu, lemon and lime curd - the elements of this smoothie didn't quite stand out, it was all coconut + pineapple and not much else could be found.
The Volcano high sundae; chocolate ice cream, berry jelly, pop rocks, honey comb, coca cola $11.50
The sundae was a tad weird mix of coke and chocolate which seemed fine at first until it did quickly became a mess, and the flavours of the jellybeans and the volcano did not exactly blend well (jelly babies and coke? Hmm...) However, the lovely combo of pop rocks and coke and creamy icecream did make it a decent treat.
It was a rainy day, and I did imagine the place to be a bit bigger and to be more filled with lolly jars and other neon-lighted fun things like an American milk bar/diner would showcase. There's one rack for lollies, and there's also a video-game table.
The array of baked goodies was so very tempting indeed!
Ai was unfortunately not feeling well, so I guess that impacted on the time it took for the dishes to come to us. As well as that, it was a wet day, and I believe the service was a bit less quality than its usual high standard due to the fact there were still so many customers despite it raining. We kept asking for napkins but never got extra.
There have definitely been several posts commending this milk bar cafe eatery, but out of the whole day, I really only enjoyed 3 of the dishes, one of which I only sampled.
Overall, Milk Bar Cafe Ish is great if you want a decent burger fix, or some baked goodies and coffee. The smoothies aren't that great, but the special dishes are definitely must-try!
